Filters and dust

How dusty is your site, really?

Filter boxes print one interval for the whole country. Out here the site decides it. Tick what applies and you get an exposure score, a starting interval and what else is worth checking.

The check

Nothing is sent anywhere — this runs in your browser. It is a starting point for how often to look, not a rule. The first filter you pull out tells you more than any calculator.

What is around the building?
What happens inside?
What filter is fitted?

If you are not sure, the depth is printed on the edge of the filter along with the size.

    Beyond the filter

Where the dust goes when the filter misses it

    • The indoor coilFine dust sticks to a wet coil and builds a mat. It shows up as poor cooling and a system that runs longer for the same result.
    • The blower wheelDust packs into the blades and quietly cuts airflow. It is a strip-and-clean job, not a wipe.
    • Return leaksA leaking return duct pulls unfiltered attic or crawl air straight past the filter. Sealing it does more than upgrading the filter would.
    • The outdoor coilGrit and cottonwood on the condenser raise head pressure. A gentle wash from the inside out, at the right time of year, is part of a service.

Not sure what is fitted, or whether it is working?

Send us the filter size and what the score said and we will tell you whether a deeper cabinet is worth fitting on your system — some air handlers have the static pressure to spare and some do not.
